A few years ago, an incredible Bible teacher taught me to read the Word in a new way.
He said one day he realized he could fall out of love with Jesus overnight. So every morning, he would open his Bible and say, “Jesus I need you to tell me that you love me. Show me how you love me through what I am reading today.”
And then he would
This was a little awkward for me at first and took some time to get the hang of, but it has been absolutely transforming for the way I read the Bible. It is amazing to start listening for Jesus and listing the intimate ways in which He loves you. It has made my relationship with Him deeper and even more personal.
Truly God’s Word is a love letter to His people and if you take the time and listen in your heart His love speaks between lines of scripture.
“He Speaks” will be a regular series on Life and Lip Gloss in hopes of encouraging you towards hearing Him speak His love into your life.
Here is an example of a verse that has meant a lot to me lately and especially this week.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 (NIV)
I typically start by looking up the scripture in a few different translations…
God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him. (the message)
GOD IS our Refuge and Strength [mighty and impenetrable to temptation], a very present help in trouble. (AMP)
God is our protection and our strength. He always helps in times of trouble. (NCV)
Then, sometimes but not always, I define key words in the passage…
Refuge – a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger or trouble; a place that provides protection; something to which one has recourse from difficulty.
Strength – the ability to resist being moved or broken by a force; the quality that allows someone to deal with problems in a determined and effective way.
And then I write “Jesus tell me that you love me” at the top of my journal.
I love you because…
I am your safe place
I am your shelter, your protection
I am where you can turn in difficulty
In me, you cannot be moved or broken by an earthly circumstance because I have overcome the world.
I can equip you to deal with anything.
I am always available to you.
I am here for you no matter what.
Perhaps it is a word or sometimes it is a full phrase but I promise you can
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will opened for you.” Luke 11:7
Because He Speaks.
