Can we just take a minute to celebrate the fact that the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition came out this week and featured its first ever plus size model?!?!
And not only did the stunning Ashley Graham grace the pages of the SI swim issue, she is one of three cover models this year!
“So how do you choose one (cover model)? The logical answer would be, Pick the most beautiful one. But what defines beauty today? The truth is, times have changed and one size does not fit all. Our position on beauty is well-known – healthy, curvy, vivacious, and bold. It’s not size. … So we don’t have just one cover, because beauty doesn’t take just one form. If there is one thing I realized pouring over those thousands of images, it’s that beauty is all around us.” – SI Swim Editor MJ Day
SI choosing to put a plus size model on their cover signifies the fact that the definition of beauty is evolving.
But not only is Ashley Graham beautiful on the outside, most importantly, she is beautiful on the inside.
Ashley is a positive body image activist and speaker.
In her honest and empowering Ted Talk Plus Size? More Like My Size, Ashely candidly reveals her struggles with body image and how she is redefining beauty in an industry that has narrowly and impossibly defined beauty for far too long.
“Over the years, I had to learn to reclaim my body as my own and in reclaiming my body as my own I understood as a woman that I had a greater purpose to redefine beauty.”
Ashely says her Mother has been especially influential in this area of her life …
“She told me and taught me that true beauty comes from within. And that validation and self-worth must also come from within.”
Thank you Ashely for reminding us all that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes but most of all beauty comes from within.
